Grow Annapolis School Garden Project

Goal: Creating school garden spaces that are accessible to children thru-out Anne Arundel County Public Schools, with a school garden at every school.

Project Overview

In 2011 Grow Annapolis, in partnership with Anne Arundel Public Schools and the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, created our first school garden on the grounds of the Annapolis Elementary School playground, where over 200 children participated in the school garden and took part in an end of the year salad party.

In 2011 Grow Annapolis worked helped plant and maintain the Annapolis High School Garden. Grow Annapolis also participated in the schools Summer Bridge Program by working in the garden with incoming 9th graders, giving community garden tours and speaking to students about the importance of fresh, healthy foods.

In 2012 Grow Annapolis, in partnership with Anne Arundel Public Schools, the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, Anne Arundel Department of Recreation & Parks and the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation, created a school garden for the children of Park Elementary school. The garden will be incorporated into the school curriculum and has a school garden club that is managed by the Anne Arundel Department of Recreation & Parks.

In 2012 Grow Annapolis also created a school garden at Shady Side Elementary School, in partnership with Anne Arundel Public Schools, Anne Arundel County Department of Health and the Cool HAT (Healthy and Tasty) Garden. The garden at Shady Side Elementary will be incorporated into curriculum and used to prepare kids for Southern High Schools Agricultural Science Program. The garden is also being used by Cool HAT Garden to run an after-school garden club and camps during the summer.
