The meeting will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 pm and will include a tour of the proposed site, a presentation of the project, Q&A and a time for sharing ideas.

The goal of the Bywater Community Garden Project is the creation of a permanent space for Annapolis residents to grow their own healthy food and connect with their neighbors. Grow Annapolis is a grass roots movement, and we are looking for community members and local organizations who care about the health, self-sufficiency and sustainability of their community. Please consider joining our efforts thru volunteering or making a charitable donation if this is you.

DC’s Field to Fork Network is offering a free Urban Gardening Forum on Feb 18th from 9:30am to 4:00pm. The event will take place at Coolidge High School, and will include family and how-to gardening workshops, roundtable conversations, cooking demonstrations, and an information fair. A detailed agenda can be found here.

According to Field to Fork’s website, the goals of the Rooting DC Forum are to:

  • Build community among groups and individuals who want to improve our city through gardening and greening
  • Share information and resources about gardening and greening in DC
  • Provide opportunity for DC gardeners to coalesce around specific areas of interest
  • Identify volunteer opportunities by creating a database of community based garden projects
  • Keep gardeners connected via monthly e-newsletters that highlight volunteer opportunities, events and news from participants

Grow Annapolis would love to send an Annapolis group to the forum to join the dialogue and bring back ideas for our community. If interested, you can pre-register for the event here. Please post a comment on the blog or RSVP on the Facebook event page if you plan to attend so we can keep you in the loop. Include whether you are interested in carpooling, and whether you need a ride or are willing to drive and give others a ride.

We will also host a panel discussion after the movie where we’ll focus on our local food movement here in Annapolis, and what we can do to help it along.

The event will run from 6:00 pm to 8:30 and will be held at the Roger “pip” Moyer Recreation Center in Annapolis on Feb 24th.

The hearing will be held in the City Council Chamber at 7:30 pm and is open to the public. If you have always wanted to raise chickens in your backyard, here’s your big chance! Come to voice your approval or concerns.

Currently, it is against city code to raise chickens or any other animal for the purpose of consumption within the Annapolis City Limits. If the hearing goes well, it will allow residents the right to house as many as five egg-laying hens, so long as the chicken coops meet a minimum setback requirement of 5 feet from neighbors’ property lines. For local foodies and urban homesteaders, this is exciting news. Try getting more local or fresh than your own backyard!
